Tough Finish Still Nets Brett Top Spot In Points; 2011 SPORTSMAN CHAMP! |
On a cold and windy night in Upstate New York, the high banks of Lebanon Valley was able to heat up the with the final points night for several classes.
When all was set and done, Brett Haas was able to outdistance Steve Meilleur for his first-career Sportsman track title. In doing so, the 17-year-old Pittsfield, MA pilot became the youngest open-wheel division champion in track history.

Our Sportsman feature saw Alan Houghtaling take his new car after a bad wreck a couple weeks back to victory on Saturday. The car was on rails and he never faltered even when pressured by Cullen Howe who finished second followed by our current high point leader Brett Haas vying for a top spot.

Earlier in the night, the LV Sportsman completed their 20 lap feature event with the #3 of Kim Herrick powering out to the early lead, and holding on for the win over a distant 2nd of Brian Sandstedt. Brett Haas battled to finish 3rd followed by Olden Dwyer and Chad Pierce to complete the top 5.

West Lebanon, NY - The LV Sportsman 20 lap shootout was more like a survival match than a feature event. By the end of the event, there were only 8 cars running as attrition and wrecks dwindled the field. At the checkers, Frank Harper crossed the line 1st followed by Steve Meilleur, Dylan Gibson, Kevin Petrucci, and Kim Herrick to complete the top 5 finishers of the unofficial finish at press time.
